[New? Hi. I’m Jayson. I started it is what it is to connect the pieces of my process connect in real time—what i’m doing, where, and (most importantly,) how. I’ll explain the rest as we go. This month is a short one, but more to come in the fall!]
it is what it is (recent + upcoming events, NOMAD)
Three days until our next NOMAD, celebrating the release of andriniki’s debut poetry collection, Quiet Fires. The inimitable Catherine Chen & Renia White will be joining us—special thanks to Grandchamps for hosting us, as always—click the flyer above to get your ticket today!
This event is funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
it is what it will be (outside, plans)
the collected is a (weekly! virtual!) call to study where we immerse ourselves in the collected works of one poet per session—their poems, their craft, their social & political contexts. we will gather to analyze, discuss, and write after each individual collection, with the goal of creating an informed, holistic conversation with their bodies of work. this session features the Collected Poems of Bob Kaufman | & will begin in late August. Sliding scale is $125-300, due by or before 8/25. If cost or timing are an obstacle, email j@jaysonpsmith.com & we’ll work it out.
There are about 8 spots left for registration—use this form to tap in!
it is what it could be (a process journal, of sorts)
For the last three days (and through the rest of this year), I’ve been working with thirteen brilliant interns with BAM’s Brooklyn Interns in Arts & Culture program. Every day they’ve completely re-shaped my thinking about how I can be more gracious with myself, my practice, this very very uncertain future. Jason Reynolds once said “children are an antidote to hopelessness”—I think they might be the answer to inertia, too.
More soon.
xo,
J
